Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who makes his writer-directorial debut in his upcoming film, Don Jon, released a clip from his film on Father’s Day.
The clip is an interaction between Gordon-Levitt and his father in the movie, Jon Sr., played by Tony Danza, as he is first introduced to Gordon-Levitt’s girlfriend (Scarlett Johansson). Gordon-Levitt’s character is a Jersey Shore inspired ladies man and porn addict who gains unrealistic expectations of women through the porn industry, which hinders his ability to fall in love.
In contrast, according to Screenrant, Johansson’s character is also affected by what she sees in the media. She plays a character named Barbara Sugarman who believes she should be treated like a woman in a romantic comedy. This affects how she interacts with men including Gordon-Levitt’s character, Joe.
Gordon-Levitt premiered his film earlier in the year at Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Relativity for $4 million.
Gordon-Levitt described the film after it screened and said to Wired: “I wanted to tell a story about how people objectify each other and how media often contributes to that, especially when it comes to love and sex. We learn a lot lot of expectations from movies, or TV shows, or commercials, or magazines, or pornography, and those expectations are unrealistic and maybe not so healthy. And if we’re busy comparing our own lives and our partners to those expectations, we’re doomed.”
According to Deadline, the film was supposed to be released in October, but was bumped up a month and will now be in theaters on September 27. Check out the first released clip!
