Though rumors are swirling of Kanye West’s alleged affair with model Leyla Ghobadi, which the rapper’s rep has since denied, the “Mercy” singer spoke of his love for pregnant girlfriend Kim Kardashian and his protective parental instincts to the New York Times.

Before news of the since-denied cheating scandal broke, West sat down with the The New York Times to discuss his new album and his highly publicized private life.

"I'm the type of rock star that likes to have a girlfriend, you know?” West said of his relationship with Kardashian, “I'm the type of soul that likes to be in love and likes to be able to focus. And that inspires me."

West also defended his choice to makeover Kardashian. His raid of her closet aired in on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians , when the two were in the beginning stages of their relationship. The rapper says negative responses to his gesture have pushed him away from further appearances on the reality show.

"That was from a place of love,” West said of his wardrobe takeover. “It's hard when people read things in a lot of different ways. You know, the amount of backlash I got from it is when I decided not to be on the show anymore. And it's not that I have an issue with the show; I just have an issue with the amount of backlash that I get. Because I just see like, an amazing person that I'm in love with that I want to help."

West also shared some of his thoughts on fatherhood, saying he would “do anything to protect my child or my child’s mother.” The rapper and his ladylove are expected to welcome a baby girl in July, and both West and Kardashian have said they intend to keep the baby as shielded from the media as possible.

"Well, I just don't want to talk to America about my family," West continued. "Like, this is my baby. This isn't America's baby."

It seems West is as protective of his music as his family. Chron reported earlier this week that the “I am a God” singer is refusing to release a single for his upcoming album, or extensively promote the work.

“Honestly at this point, I could give a f— about selling a million records as long as I put out an album for the summer that y’all can rock to for all f—’ summer,” West said during his performance at New York’s Governors Ball Music Festival, at which he debuted two new tracks. “At this point I don’t really give a f— about outside opinion.”
