Marvel’s Avengers 2 might be two years away, but the studio is already looking to make it’s first big casting news for a new hero that will be featured in the Joss Whedon film: Quiksilver. According to reports on Friday night Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is reprising his role in Kick-Ass in a sequel, is the frontrunner.

Sources for both Deadline and The Wrap say that he’s the top choice. However, no offers have been made and negotiations haven’t started. His work on other projects could also cause a scheduling conflict that would make it hard for him to devote time to the Marvel project.

Quicksilver is a hero with superspeed and he’s also a mutant, which means that Fox and Disney’s Marvel share the film rights to the character. Ironically, Bryan Singer has picked Evan Peters, who also appears in Kick-Ass, as Quicksilver for Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Whedon is reportedly looking to bring both Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch into the fold in his sequel to the 2012 smash Avengers. The sequel’s not scheduled until May 2015, so it is still in the very early going. After all, Marvel is still filling out the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, which is set for release in August 2014.

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall hits theaters on Aug. 16.

Taylor-Thomas has also been cast in Legendary Picture’s Godzilla remake.
