Melissa McCarthy has responded to New York Observer Film Critic Rex Reed nearly four months after he slammed her role in Identity Thief calling her “tractor sized” and “obese” in his review.

In a sit down interview with New York Times, McCarthy responded to Reed’s hurtful criticism, which states that she dedicates her career to being “obese and obnoxious with equal success” with a strong-mature response.

"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate," she explained. "I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."

She does, however, explain that if she had heard those digs at a younger age it “may have crushed me.” McCarthy notes the difficulties of being a woman with a certain perception in the media.

With the negativity behind her, McCarthy is gearing up to star alongside Sandra Bullock in the comedy The Heat which hits theaters June 28.
