MGM is moving forward with a remake of the 1982 horror film Poltergeist. The studio is teaming up with Fox 2000 for the project, which Oz The Great And Powerful director Sam Raimi has signed on to produce.

MGM and Fox 2000, which is one of Twentieth Century Fox’s divisions, made the news official in a joint statement, which posted at Deadline. David Lindsay-Abaire, who co-wrote Oz, will pen the script to Poltergeist. Monster House director Gil Kenan has signed on to direct.

Raimi is producing with Rob Tapert (The Possession) through Ghost House Pictures. The executive producers are Nathan Kahane and Roy Lee.

Raimi, who directed the original Evil Dead trilogy and produced the recent remake of that film, was first linked to the production in April 2012.

Fox will take the domestic marketing and distribution duties for the project and a few international markets. MGM will take the remaining international markets and international TV distribution. Fox also gets domestic TV distribution and home video distribution. Fox already distributes MGM’s home video releases.

According to The Wrap, the plot for the new film finds a family moving into an outdated home, where their daughter is taken by a spectre. Production starts in the fall, although no castmembers were announced.

MGM is also working on remakes of Carrie and Robocop.
