Miley Cyrus is opening up about her Disney roots and how she is determined to swim as hard as she can against the tide of public expectation.

The 20-year-old singer is fresh off the success of her single “We Can’t Stop,” and touring the talk show circuit to discuss her untamed sound and her role as “Miley 2.0,” as she has been dubbed by Billboard .

"I want to start as a new artist. I consider my upcoming album my first, really," Cyrus explains, saying that the music she recorded as a 16-year-old artist now seems “so irritating.”

“I can't just erase that stuff and start over,” Cyrus says, experiencing the growing pains of coming into her own as a serious recording artist. “I feel so disconnected from it.”

Cyrus seems to be evolving both as a singer and pop icon, as her recent fashion transformation has caused veteran Hannah Montana fans to either scratch their heads or excitedly cheer on the “mature version” of the “Party in the U.S.A.” singer. However, she is not abandoning her “country twang,” but rather incorporating it into sounds that are currently piquing her interest.

"A lot of people wanted to try to make me the white Nicki Minaj," Cyrus says. "That's not what I'm trying to do. I love 'hood' music, but my talent is as a singer."

And while news of her parents’ divorce comes at an inconvenient time for the promotion of her transformation, Cyrus has not lost her determination.

"I want my record to be the biggest record in the world, and I've given everything to get here, even down to friends and family and relationships-I've just put this music first,” Cyrus said. “It's not like I'm losing who I am-I actually found out more about who I am by making this music. I'm going on a journey, and that's more than a lot of 20-year-olds can say. And I'm still going to change so much.”
