A five day search for missing teenager Dylan Redwine ended Wednesday when law enforcement officials found human bones and other items in a 12-mile stretch of Middle Mountain Road. He was reported missing in November 2012.
The search began on Saturday. It was supposed to only last two days, but the rugged terrain made searching difficult.
“The reason for the five-day search was the type of terrain. [I]t’s heavily timbered, with lots of underbrush and falloffs to drainage. The search area varies from hundreds of feet off the road to five feet off the road you have cliffs,” police spokesman Dan Bender told the Durango Herald in a telephone interview.
Elaine Redwine, Dylan’s mother, reported him missing on November 19, 2012. She lives near Colorado Springs. Dylan was visiting his father, Mark, in Vallecito for Thanksgiving. Dylan arrived on November 18, 2012 for his court-ordered visit.
Elaine and Mark appeared on the Dr. Phil show to discuss their son’s disappearance. They argued with each other during the show and accused each other of being responsible for their son’s disappearance.
"The parents are obviously devastated. It's not the kind of news we were hoping to give them. We were hoping to find him alive," Durango police Lt. Ray Shupe told the Associated Press.
