Joseph Bertolozzi is recording sounds produced by banging on different parts of the Eiffel Tower with varying intensity and with different types of mallets and drumsticks. Bertolozzi, the New Yorker, plans to collect the sounds and compose music using solely sounds from the Eiffel Tower.
According to Yahoo! News, since March 27 Bertolozzi and his team have collected nearly 2,000 different sounds from the Eiffel Tower.
The idea came through Bertolozzi’s wife. Reportedly, he said “My wife was mimicking the way I play my percussion with my arms flailing and everything. She was near a poster of the Eiffel Tower, took a swing at it and she went 'Bong!'”
Inspired by his wife, the 54-year-old, spent more than four years attempting to play the Eiffel Tower as an instrument.
He first created “Bridge Music” which consists of sounds recorded from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge. The song was released in 2009.
According to The New York Times, Bertolozzi had to convince the Eiffel Tower administration of his legitimacy as a musician. He also had to raise $40,000.
