Neil Diamond made an emotional trip to Fenway Park for the first Red Sox game in Boston after the bombings at the Boston Marathon. He was so moved by the experience that the legendary singer decided to write a new tribute song for the people of Boston.
"I was moved by the unity and the attitude of the people in Boston,” Diamond said in a statement to the Associated Press. “And that's really all a songwriter needs, is to be inspired. It doesn't happen very often but when it does you have to follow that muse and I did.”
According to The Washington Post, “Freedom Song (They’ll Never Take Us Down)” was be posted on iTunes and Amazon on Tuesday. His first live performance of the song will be on July 4 at PBS’ A Capitol Fourth special and at the Nationals-Brewers game. Both events are in Washington DC.
Proceeds are going to the Boston One Fund and the The Wounded Warriors Project.
Diamond performed “Sweet Caroline” at Fenway Park after the April 15 bombings and donated royalties to the song to the One Fund. Sales of the track, which is sung by fans during every Sox game at Fenway, jumped 597 percent, noted Billboard.
