Former South African President Nelson Mandela is now in critical condition after spending more than two weeks at a hospital in Pretoria with a recurring lung infection.

Ninety-four-year-old Mandela’s condition had “become critical over the past 24 hours,” a medical team told current President Jacob Zuma and deputy president of the ruling African National Congress, Cyril Ramaphosa, reports the Wall Street Journal.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well looked after and is comfortable,” Zuma said, according to Independent Online. “He is in good hands.”

The Nobel Peace Laureate entered the hospital on June 8 with a recurring lung infection in his fourth visit to the hospital since December.

Claims that Mandela had suffered cardiac arrest were dismissed by doctors.

“His condition is clearly worse than serious, and clearly he's receiving intensive care treatment,” Mac Maharaj, Zuma’s spokesperson, said. “What form that takes I'm not in a position to go into.”

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable,” assured President Zuma.
