In a conference call late last night, President Obama promised, without specifying how, to aid Syrian rebels in their war. The policy change came in light of proof that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria used chemical weapons against civilians.
The President and his administration seemed deliberately evasive regarding how they intend to assist the rebels. News.Yahoo.com reports that Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes would only say that “This is more a situation where we're just not going to be able to lay out an inventory of what exactly falls under the scope of that assistance other than to communicate that we have made that decision.”
Some speculate that this is an indicator Obama will send more Americans to the area, although the subject could be touchy as the administration will not officially confirm that there are Americans there currently. But whether the aid is objects—as “inventory” seems to suggest—or people, U.S. intelligence forces have already vetted the rebels and found a middleman to support and transport either from Turkey, according to USAToday.com.
Other sources believe the type of aid is clear. See, for example, Bloomberg’s news report:
Syria could attack Turkey for aiding the U.S. in providing for the rebels. Unofficially, however, Turkey has already been providing the support and transportation the U.S. would now request officially.
