Don’t Mess With Texas, a comedy spec script, has landed at Universal. The project has Reese Witherspoon and Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara slated to star.

The script drew attention from several of the studios, but Universal won the bidding war, notes Deadline. John Quaintance and David Feeney wrote the script and Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea will produce with Dana Fox and Vergara.

The writers previously worked together on Ben & Kate, a sitcom cancelled by Fox after its first season. Dana Fox was also an executive producer on that show and wrote What Happens In Vegas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be a female buddy comedy, pairing a cop with the prisoner. It’s not known which actress will play the parts (although, considering her recent run in with the law, Witherspoon playing the cop would be hilarious).

Witherspoon is an Oscar winner and just starred in Jeff Nichols’ Mud and is set to co-star with Keanu Reeves in Passengers.

Meanwhile, outside of Modern Family, Vergara is going to work with Jon Favreau on Chef next. She also stars in Machete Kills.
