Return From The Unknown is a collaboration of jazz-rock and funk with a touch of the 1970s jazz swagger.

The band came together in 2009 when Rick Drumm was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Due to the chemotherapy it made it difficult for Drumm to travel. So the band would go over to his house and play to raise his spirit.

Drumm said on his website, Rick Drumm, the meaning behind the name of the band, “We played together when we could, but as I recovered, we formed a real band, and I named it Fatty Necroses, because although the doctors got most of my cancer, they left some dead tissue in places too difficult to reach. So I’ve still got fatty necroses inside of me. Fatty necroses sounded to me like an old Memphis jazz or blues man, and I liked it, so that’s our name.”

Guitarists Fred Hamilton and Corey Christiansen wrote the music on the album. Trombonist Mike Brumbaugh and trumpeter Pete Grimaldi spark up main melody throughout the album.

The first single on the album is “Fatty Necrosis Sings the Blues” has the strong trumpet sound infused the beat of the drum. It holds a classic jazz vibe mixed with a rock n’ roll edge.

Following is “Gentle Spirit” which is a softer and slower beat that showcases the beat of the drums. The sound then shifts to a faster tempo in the single “Indi Funk.” It takes the similar sound and approach as the first single “Fatty Necrosis Sings the Blues.” Overall the album has a mixture of sounds contained in 9 tracks on the album.

Return From The Unknown is a jazz infused that showcases the talents of each member in the group. The meaning behind the band name and album is truly inspirational because it embodies the survival of cancer and the union of friendship.
