Summit Entertainment has been trying to make a reboot of Highlander for years and the studio will have to wait a few more years. It’s still without a director and now they don’t even have a star. Ryan Reynolds has reportedly dropped out of the project.

According to The Wrap, which first reported the news, the Green Lantern actor is no longer involved with the project. He was first linked to the film in May 2012, when 28 Days Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was still doing it.

However, The Wrap notes that Fresnadillo is also out. He left the project in November 2012. Summit said it would try to find a new director quickly, leaving Reynolds in the wings to wait for one, but it looks like he lost interest. On the plus side, it will give a new director a chance to really make the Highlander project his own, since he would also be involved in the casting of the lead.

Reynolds was going to play Connor MacLeod, an immortal swordsman forced to fight other immortals. The original 1986 film spawned sequels, a TV series and the famous line “There can only be one.”

Reynolds stars in two films that will be released within days of each other next month. He voices the title character in Dreamworks Animation’s Turbo (July 17) and co-stars with Jeff Bridges in R.I.P.D. (July 19).
