Sebastien De La Cruz, 11, was the center of media reports this week when he received racist tweets after singing the National Anthem at the NBA playoffs. He got his chance at an encore during Game 4 of the finals on Thursday night.
As we previously reported, De La Cruz responded to the hateful tweets, which included statements such as “Why they got a Mexican kid singing the national anthem,” writing, “Please do not pay attention to the negative people. I am an American living the American Dream. This is part of the American life.”
De La Cruz, a finalist on last year’s America’s Got Talent, got another shot at the American Dream when he was able to perform again.
Naples News reports the young singer said, “It makes me feel real good about myself. It makes me feel like, in San Antonio, I know there are a lot of people that encourage me to keep on doing what I want to do."
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of De La Cruz, "He's a class act. Way more mature than most his age. And as much as those comments by the idiots saddens you about your country, he makes you feel the future could be very bright."
