A second worker has died as a result of the chemical explosion and fire on Thursday at a Williams Olefins petrochemical plant in Geismar, La.

Scott Thrower, 47, died around midday on Friday after sustaining burns in the blaze, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“He was one of the victims we were concerned with overnight,” said Louisiana State Police Capt. Doug Cain. “Unfortunately, we never had a chance to speak to him.”

The first victim of the explosion was Zachary Green, 29, a plant operator whose body was found shortly after the incident.

"A lot of us in this industry have spent much of our careers working to make it safe, so when something like this happens, honestly, it feels like a big failure," said Willams Olefins CEO and President Alan Armstrong.

His voice shook as he spoke during the news conference, which took place before Thrower’s death was known, according to Reuters. “Your heart sinks, and it's just hard to know what to do, you feel pretty helpless.”

The company’s official toll of injuries sustained at the plant was 100, higher than Governor Bobby Jindal’s original toll of 73.
