When the third season finale for Showtime’s The Borgias airs later this month, that will be the final episode of the series. Jordan said that both he and the network ultimately felt that it was the right time to end the show, which starred Jeremy Irons and told the story of the scheming Pope Alexander VI and the Borgias family.

While Irons and Jordan filmed an important scene in the finale, Jordan told Deadline that the Oscar winner said, “this feels like the end of something, that the family has come to an end.”

Jordan had hoped that the show would end after four seasons, but he agreed that the season three finale was a turning point and that there might not be enough material to fill a full 10-episode season. So, he proposed a movie, but Showtime balked at the cost.

“When they looked at what it could cost, it was just too expensive,” he explained to Deadline. “Sadly, that’s what happened. I would have loved to bring all the characters to a conclusion. All of the actors were heartbroken we couldn’t continue, and so was I.”

Jordan also noted that it would be hard to make a two-hour standalone movie for the property, since it would be so tied to the series and hard to market to people who haven’t been watching.

The Borgias airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. There are just two episodes left.

While Showtime says goodbye to one religious-themed series, it will welcome a new one titled The Vatican. The pilot will be directed by Ridley Scott and it will star Kyle Chandler.

Other new shows coming to Showtime include Ray Donavan and Masters of Sex, notes THR.
