A copy of Action Comics #1, which Superman’s first appearance, has sold for $175,00, despite the damage it sustained over years of being stuck in the wall of an abandoned home.

The issue went up for auction last month after it was found in a home in Elbow Lake, Minnesota. David Gonzalez spent only $10,000 on the house itself, which he planned to fix up. He knew the comic would be worth something, but he was shocked when he heard that it was estimated to go for over $100,000.

The comic would be worth over $2 million in perfect condition, but a tear on the cover decreased its value.

ComicConnect.com held the auction, which ended on Tuesday. The site said that there were 51 bids and it wound up selling for $175,000.

Action Comics #1 is dated June 1938, but the book was actually published in April that year. The character was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

“It's so noteworthy because it was a historic milestone,” CEO Stephen Fishler told Reuters. “There was no such thing as a superhero or a man in costume (in 1938).”

Superman, played by Henry Cavill, returns to the big screen this Friday in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
