“The Bridges of Madison County,” Robert James Waller’s best-selling romance novel is set to appear on Broadway in February 2014. The 1995 film adaption of the 1992 novel starred Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. The Broadway production is to be directed by Tony-winner Bartlett Sher and feature music by “The Last Five Years” composer Jason Robert Brown.
According to The LA Times, Sher’s design team from his production “South Pacific” will be joining him for “The Bridges of Madison County,” but the cast has yet to be announced. The New York Times reported that the production will be a part of the Williamstown Theater Festival from August 1st through the 18th, for which Elena Shaddow and Steven Pasquale will play the leads.
“The Bridges of Madison County” centers on the brief, but intense and passionate love affair between a farmer’s wife, Francesca Johnson, and Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer. They meet when the latter asks directions for the bridges he is to photograph for the magazine in Iowa during the 1960s. The film adaptation was nominated for and won several awards, so the Broadway production is sure to draw in a wide audience. The exact show date is to be announced.
