Popular social media site Facebook has finally made the hashtag change, following in the footsteps of Twitter, Instagram, Google+, and Tumblr.
Facebook announced Wednesday that the site will now include clickable hashtags, according to the Huffington Post.
The change will link users more with the public than with their chosen friends on the social media network, practically altering the concept of Facebook entirely.
It is only one of Facebook’s recent alterations that make users’ posts more widely available, sometimes without their own knowledge.
Facebookers will now be able to click on or search a hashtag and see what people everywhere are saying on the topic, reports Computerworld, citing the recent Game of Thrones “Red Wedding” episode as an example.
“During primetime television alone, there are between 88 and 100 million Americans engaged on Facebook -- roughly a Super Bowl-sized audience every single night. The recent 'Red Wedding' episode of Game of Thrones received over 1.5 million mentions on Facebook, representing a significant portion of the 5.2 million people who watched the show,” wrote Greg Lindley, a product manager at Facebook.
“Hashtags are just the first step to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations,” continued Lindley.
“We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations.”
