Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had to stop their concert at the Fonda Theatre on Saturday when fire marshals deemed the venue overcrowded.

According to the Los Angeles Times, at 10:30 p.m., the singer stopped between songs to tell the audience, marshals viewed the floor area overcrowded and 100 people had to move. When no one volunteered to move to the balcony area, after the song "Melinda," Petty announced the concert was over.

After the incident the band released an official statement regarding the concert.

“To those fans who attended last night’s show at the Fonda Theatre, we are as frustrated as you.”

The Rolling Stones report, the statement goes on in saying they were under the impression by Ticketmaster and the venue that ticket sales did not reach seating However, they did note the problem the marshals saw was the overcapacity was only in the floor area, and not the terrace or balcony seating.

Saturday’s concert was the fourth of six in Petty’s tour. The show has been sold out for months, the venue capacity of 1,300. Tom Petty has two more concerts at the Fonda, which are scheduled as planned.
