Law enforcers are the main characters in this week’s major releases. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy team up for a buddy cop comedy while Channing Tatum plays a wannabe secret service agent in an explosive action film.

A tour of the White House with his daughter becomes life changing for a down on his luck cop in White House Down. When Washington D.C. gets attacked, a cop who was turned down for a presidential security job, becomes the one to protect the president. The PG-13 film stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The action thriller runs for two hours and seventeen minutes.

Two polar opposite female law enforcers are forced to work together to nab a drug lord in The Heat. FBI agent Sarah Ashburn is used to following the book but Boston PD Officer Shannon Mullins goes with her instincts. Without ever having had a partner, the two must figure out how to tolerate each other’s idiosyncrasies and still get the job done. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star in the one hour and fifty-seven minute comedy. It’s rated R for language and violence.

The night before his wedding, a man follows up with his old girlfriends in Some Girl(s). Feeling bad for how things ended, the writer meets up with his exes to apologize. Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Emily Watson, Zoe Kazan and Mia Maestro star in the unrated romantic comedy. The limited released film plays for one hour and thirty minutes.

An ex-Special Forces soldier seeks revenge for his murdered girlfriend in Redemption. Following a tour in Afghanistan, Joey ends up on the run and homeless in London. Looking to start anew, he takes on the identity of another man but gets caught up in a world of crime. When he finds out that his missing girlfriend was murdered, he goes on a mission for retribution. Jason Statham stars in the one hour and forty minute limited released drama. It’s rated R for violence, nudity and language.

A mother and a daughter with a deadly secret move to a coastal town in Byzantium. The two women are 200-year-old vampires that feed on human blood. When their secret is revealed and spread throughout their town, they’re forced to deal with the consequences of their eternal life. The thriller runs in limited theaters for one hour and fifty-eight minutes. It’s rated R for language, violence, drugs and sex.

The love lives of three brothers are told in Petunia. Having grown up with psychoanalyst parents, the young men explore life beyond what their parents’ advice. Their dysfunctional relationships unfold in the one hour and forty-eight minute comedic drama. The unrated, limited released film stars Christine Lahti, Brittany Snow and Eddie Kaye Thomas.

A couple’s relationship is put to the test when one of them decides to switch genders in Laurence Anyways. The unrated romantic drama follows the couple over a span of ten years as they deal with the opinions of others and the aftermath of the transgender transition. The two hour and forty-eight minute French film is available in limited theaters with English subtitles.

Set in the Civil War, Copperhead, shows how the fighting affected relationships amongst families, friends and lovers. The one hour and fifty-eight minute film is based on Harold Frederic’s novel. It’s rated PG-13 and available in limited theaters.

The ease of getting involved in the drug trade is examined in How to Make Money Selling Drugs. Both the violence and the money that come with the drugs are highlighted in this unrated, limited released film. The one hour and thirty-four minute documentary is produced by Entourage’s Adrian Grenier and features commentary by 50 Cent, Eminem, Russell Simmons and Susan Sarandon.

A little known punk band is the subject of the documentary in A Band Called Death. During the Motown era of the 1970’s, three brothers attempted to break on the scene with a different type of music but never skyrocketed to fame. Years later, their demo was found and gained a whole new audience. Now they’re known as the first black punk rock band. The unrated film is playing for one hour and thirty-eight minutes in limited theaters.

White House Down and The Heat are the two big movies debuting in theaters this week. Two other big action and comedy films will be released next week, Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger and the animated film Despicable Me 2.
