The Farrelly Brothers’ sequel to Dumb and Dumber has found new life at Universal and Red Granite Pictures. After Warner Bros. passed on the project, the studios swooped in on Tuesday to save the film.
Just last week, Warner Bros. decided to not make Dumb and Dumber To, the long-awaited follow-up to the beloved 1994 comedy that starred Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Both are expected to return, but the studio couldn’t see a $30 million sequel having wide appeal, especially since Carrey hasn’t been in a bona-fide blockbuster in a few years.
Shortly after that news broke, Deadline’s sources suggested that Red Granite, which co-produced Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street with Paramount, was likely going to pick up the project. Then on Tuesday, Deadline confirmed that Red Granite has saved Dumb and Dumber To and that Universal has signed on to distribute domestically. The project will have to be filmed very soon and quickly, since Daniels has to go back to filming Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom for HBO.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly also confirmed the news with a Twitter post.

Sean Anders and John Morris wrote the original script for the sequel and the Farrelly Brothers did their own rewrites on the script. They are aiming to make the comedy PG-13, like the first film.
