Chronicle was a surprise hit for Fox last year, so plans got moving on a sequel right away. But the sequel will now be moving forward without help from the creative team that made the original, including writer Max Landis.
According to TheWrap, Landis took to Twitter on Wednesday to tell fans that he has been taken off the project. He is still confident that Fox will make a sequel and said that the studio hired new writers.
Landis began his Twitter statement after a fan called out to him for a Chronicle 2. Then another user asked for more details and he said, “I've been off Chronicle 2 for months now. Fox had a different direction they wanted to take the series, [director] Josh [Trank] was never attached.”
“Ultimately, I'm just very grateful to Fox for making a film as close to my original script as Chronicle was. For making the film at all,” Landis wrote. “So yeah it's sad that as of right now I'm not involved in the sequel, and don't know what it's about even, but ultimately I can't complain.”
He explained that he’s been “lucky” so far, considering that the film was a hit and that he’s already working on his first feature film as director. Landis told fans that Chronicle 2 is “still probably happening” and that “there are no real hard feelings” between him and Fox.
“They hired new writers on it. I'm sure they'll announce soon. Just hope this answers the questions I've been getting everyday,” he concluded.
Later, a fan asked if he could see Landis’ original Chronicle 2 script, but Landis said it would be disrespectful and “probably illegal.”
According to BoxOfficeMojo, Chronicle made $126 million worldwide. Its success lead Fox to hiring director Josh Trank for its Fantastic Four reboot.
The truth is, when you're successful as a screenwriter, you have to just take everything in stride. That's like more than half the job.

Chronicle 2 is still probably happening, just not with my involvement as of now. It's a bummer, but there are no real hard feelings.
