SyFy keeps milking the buzz from Sharknado, the outrageous, intentionally cheesy movie the network aired earlier this month. The network is teaming up with Regal Cinemas to screen it at around 200 theaters.
The one night only event is scheduled for Aug. 2 at midnight and tickets will cost $12.50 each.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Regal thinks that this can become The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which audiences have enjoyed at late night screenings for three decades.
“You know how audiences have had fun with Rocky Horror Picture Show over the years. If the internet reactions to this film are any indication, then our moviegoers are primed and ready to enjoy Sharknado larger than life in cinemas,” Chris Sylvia, director of digital marketing for Regal Entertainment Group, stated. “Regal is proud to be giving our guests this chance to fuel the social media whirlwind by inviting friends to come to the show and tweeting reactions.”
SyFy and producer The Asylum created a huge buzz on Twitter when Sharknado originally aired two weeks ago. It drew over 1.3 million viewers during its first airing and was repeated a week later. A sequel was announced last week, with the Sharknado heading towards New york City this time. The network is hosting a contest to decide the name.
In the meantime, Ghostshark premieres on Aug. 22.
