Adam Lambert has cut ties with his record label, RCA Records, after the label attempted to push the American Idol alum to release an album of cover songs.

The season eight runner-up of the reality television show penned a letter to RCA Records explaining his departure from the company, citing “creative differences.” The Huffington Post reports that RCA would only back the 31-year-old singer if he agreed to release an album of covers of 1980’s pop songs.

In the letter, published exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter , Lambert expresses his frustration with the request to produce an all covers album stating, "my heart is simply not in doing a covers album."

Of his time at RCA, Lambert said, “I have been truly fortunate to work with an amazing roster of producers, writers and engineers. Thanks to them, I have grown as both a songwriter and a vocalist.”

“Artistically & professionally, I think it is essential that I continue with this evolution,” Lambert said of the future of his career. “I am already deep into writing new material with some very talented colleagues for a brand new album, and I can't tell you how excited I am to share this new sound & direction. This music is where my heart is, and I believe that is what my fans want to hear.”

Lambert closes the letter by saying that his priority is fostering his fan base.

“My passion for the music & respect for the fans will always come first,” Lambert says. “I am excited to find a new label team who shares this vision.”
