AFI (A Fire Inside) is a California alternative punk rock band. The band consists of front man Davey Havok as vocals, Adam Carson, drummer and backup vocalist, Hunter Burgan, bassist and guitarist Jade Puget.

KROQ reports that AFI released the first single “I Hope You Suffer” from their ninth album Burials on July 18 on their website. The single is now available for download on iTunes.

It’s been four long years since AFI has released anything since their 2009 Crash Love album. The single “I Hope You Suffer” is in classic AFI fashion with Havok’s combination of screaming and sensual singing. It captures the edgy punk rock vibe and explosive hard rock sound. In the single Havok is singing to an ex-lover with the lyrics “I faced destruction and you just killed me and walked away/I gave my heart to the cruel now it will not beat again/I hope you do/I hope you suffer/I hope you do/Just like I suffered.”

With the much anticipated album Burials soon being released Havok said he wanted to try something new with the album. Though judging by the single and album title Havok stuck with the same idea he has used in the past.

About the upcoming album Havok told Rolling Stone, "It is certainly – embarrassingly so – a very dark album, especially in its candidness, which is something, to be honest, that's disappointing to me. It's something I just keep coming back to – I can't escape it. It's always a joy to me to reach away from that. But the themes and sentiments on this record are within that darker realm and that darker tone because I've always been honest in everything that I write. It's beyond me. I'm crippled. There's nothing I can do but be genuine in my writing, and that's what came out this time – without any sort of pointed effort."

Havok continues to say that Burials is different from Crash Love because that album was a “stripped-down” record that they started to create in the early nineties. Havok and Jade started writing songs for Burials two years ago. They wanted to ensure that they were completely happy with the end result and, that their fan would get their message through the music.

Burials will be released on October 22, 2013.
