In a surprising decision, a federal judge ruled Tuesday to postpone an Alabama law requiring abortion clinics conform to ambulatory care center standards. Eight other states have similar laws, which proponents argue make abortions safer, while critics claim are a tactic to restrict a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.

The best example of a similar bill is in Texas, where despite Wendy Davis’s best efforts , the restrictive, clinic-closing law passed—see TheCelebrityCafe.
So what was different about Alabama?

According to Reuters, the law, was supposed to go into effect August 15th, was delayed because of another pending lawsuit. Until that suit, scheduled for March 24th next year, goes forward, the law remains in limbo. It would close 3 of the 5 abortion clinics in the state, and is part of a rising wave of social conservativeness, NPR notes.
