After a summer filled with explosive and destructive blockbusters - all rated PG-13 - moviegoers can finally look forward to the major dramas that are released in the fall for Oscar season. One of the most anticipated is Nebraska, a father/son dramedy by The Descendants director Alexander Payne. There’s no explosions or cities getting decimated or even nudity, but it’s been rated R.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Payne and Stephanie Ito, the head of production at PAramount, had appealed to the Motion Picture Association of America’s ratings board to get the film a PG-13 rating, which would help the small-scale Black & white film reach a larger audience.
But the appeal failed. The film has been stuck with an “R” rating and the only reason is for “some language.” The MPAA’s R-rating means that no one under 17 can be admitted without a parent or adult.
Nebraska stars veteran actor Bruce Dern and Saturday Night Live’s Will Forte as father and son who reunite on a trip from Montana to Nebraska to claim a contest prize. The film won rave reviews after it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, with Dern winning the Best Actor prize.
Paramount has scheduled the film for Nov. 22.
Payne is an Oscar favorite, earning Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for both Sideways and The Descendants.
