Dzhokar Tsarnaev, the infamous Boston Marathon bombing suspect who is being charged with a 30-count indictment including 17 charges that could earn him the death penalty, will appear in court for the first time Wednesday.
Tsarnaev, a native Chechen, is held responsible for the April 15 explosions at The Boston Marathon, which killed three people and wounded more than 260, many victims even losing their legs. Days after he was found hiding in a backyard boat badly wounded, leaving the city of Boston on lockdown for a day while the police were frantically searching.
According to Washington Post, Tsaraev, 19, and his older brother, 26, assembled homemade bombs to go off at the finish line of the marathon. Tsarnaev also shot dead Sean Collier, a police officer from the Massachusetts Institue of Technology, during a shootout. His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was left dead after an attempted carjack while running from the police.
Charges against Tsarnaev include the killing of the police officer and carjacking, among countless bomb-related and murder charges.
Tons of people surround the Boston Federal courthouse where Tsarnaev is being arraigned, making security even tighter than usual.
As of right now the biggest concern of Tsarnaev’s attorney, public defender Miriam Conrad, is saving him from the death penalty.
"I suspect that Miriam will start tomorrow by trying to change his image and make him look like the normal, average, clean-cut young kid," Walter Prince, a former Boston federal prosecutor, told Chicago Tribune.
Tsarnaev was reportedly injured very badly during the gun battle prior to his arrest, and after being treated at a city hospital, has been in a Fort Devens, Massachusetts prison.
This is his first public appearance since his arrest on April 19.
