Incubus front man Brandon Boyd released his four-track EP called Sons of the Sea: Compass on June 25.
Incubus took five years between recording before releasing If Not Now, When? in 2011. Boyd told Rolling Stone, "Incubus is taking a break. It's going to look like a hiatus by the end of it."
Despite taking a break from Incubus Boyd was working hard on releasing the EP and his third book. Sons of the Sea: Compass is the follow-up to Boyd’s solo debut The Wild Trapeze that was released in 2010.
The Wild Trapeze sounded like another Incubus album with 10 rock hard singles. About Sons of the Sea: Compass Boyd said, "It's different from Incubus in the sense that there was a committee of two as opposed to committee of five, so it's a lot more piano and rhythm, melodic weird pop. It's like oddball pop."
The EP opens with the single, “Space and Time” that melodic with the infusion of prominent guitar riffs and beating of the drums. Boyd’s vocals are captivating as usual and the song has a catchy chorus. The next single is “Come Together” channels classic sounds from different eras of music. It has an 80’s vibe and definitely embodies the pop sound. “Where All The Songs Come From” is the next compelling single with it’s alternative rock and orchestral pop beat.
About the single Boyd told Rolling Stone, "This is a piece about the moment when you understand that as good or as bad as something seems, it's exactly where you are supposed to be. "If perceived as such, one can have access to a limitless inspiration, a 'place' of sorts that is the wellspring of creativity! Cheesy? Maybe. But fun? Hell yes."
The last song on the album is “Lady Black” that showcases Boyd’s lyrical genius. It’s a mellow single that paints vivid images while listening to his beautiful and soothing voice.
Below is the single “Where All the Songs Come From." Boyd has yet another successful collaboration of songs in Compass.
