Bruce Springsteen is the latest musician to pay tribute to Trayvon Martin during a performance. The Boss sang “American Skin (41 Shots)" during his show in Ireland Tuesday for Martin.
According to a friend of a Star-Ledger reporter, Springsteen spotted a sign requesting that he perform the song, which was first performed in 2000 with the E Street Band.
It was inspired by the death of Amadou Diallo, who was shot by police in New York City in 1999. He first played it in Atlanta in 2000 then played it during all 10 shows at Madison Square Garden that year. springsteen only occasionally performs it now, including during a 2012 show in Tampa, near where Martin was killed in Sanford, Florida.
“I want to send this one out as a letter back home. For justice for Trayvon Martin,” Springsteen told the crowd at Thomond Park in Limerick, reports NME.
Springsteen’s tribute comes after Stevie Wonder told a crowd in Quebec City that we wouldn’t perform in Florida or any state that still has a ‘Stand Your Ground’ law. Beyonce and Rihanna also took to social media to share their shock that George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the shooting death of Martin.
