A Californian teacher was arrested on Monday for inappropriate sexual relations with a student after giving birth to the student’s baby two weeks prior.
Citrus Valley High School teacher Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, 28, was arrested for having a sexual relationship with a student who was 16 years old when the relationship started last summer. The relationship lasted a year before the student’s mother reported it to the school district, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.
“The district was recently made aware of allegations involving a high school student and teacher. We immediately notified the police and placed the employee on leave,” said Assistant Superintendent Sabine Robertson-Phillips.
According to Los Angeles CBS, police believe that the now 17-year-old boy, whose name was not released, is the father of Whitehurst’s two-week old baby.
Whitehurst was arrested at her home at 8:45 p.m. on Monday, but released later that evening after posting the $25, 000 bail. She is set back in court in 45 to 90 days for a preliminary hearing.
A second student has since come forward to admit he too had a relationship with the teacher back in 2007.
