About 100 jail inmates out of more than 1,100 who escaped from the jail in the Libyan city of Benghazi have been recaptured, a security official stated.

Some 1,120 inmates broke out of the Al-Kwafiya prison a day after the assassination of a prominent political activist who was killed in the violence-prone region of Benghazi reported the BBC news. But whether the two incidents are related is yet to be confirmed.

Officials have told the media that there had been an attack on the facility from outside as well as there had been riots inside.

According to Irish Times, Mohammad Sharif, head of security in Benghazi told Reuters, “The prison is back in operation as of this morning. Seventy prisoners were brought in initially. Another 30 were caught in the town of al-Marj and seven in Ajdabiyah. They will be brought back to Kuafiya.”

The escapees also included criminals from other African states.

Benghazi has been politically volatile and seen a wave of unrest since last year with numerous attacks on security forces, where the US ambassador and three other Americans were also killed.
