As a filmmaker, Christopher Guest is best known for pioneering the mockumentary, making hilarious films like Best In Show and the new HBO series Family Tree. But to most fans, he’ll always be remembered as a member of Spinal Tap, the outrageous heavy metal band that debuted in 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap. In a new interview that was supposed to promote Family Tree, Guest touched on spinal Tap and a possible reunion.
In the interview with The Guardian, Guest was asked about performing again. “We get asked to do shows on a regular basis,” Guest, who co-wrote This Is Spinal Tap, said. “But what I will say is that we're in the midst of talking about something for next year.”
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the rest of the group includes Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins) and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls). Guest’s character’s name is Nigel Tufnel.
Spinal Tap performed at the 2009 GlastonBury Festival at the Pyramid Stage, a show Guest recalled fondly. “It was a fantastic show,” he told the Guardian. “There were 130,000 people there or something. Since the film 30 years ago we've gone on tour, playing Wembley, the Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall… It's weird but great. The fiction became real.”
This Is Spinal Tap remains one of the most beloved mockumentaries and rock films ever made and was directed by Rob Reiner. Guest’s Family Tree premiered on HBO in May.
