Taunting authorities on Twitter might not be such a good idea if you are a convict trying to keep a low profile.
Wanda Podgurski told District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis to “catch me if you can” in a tweet somewhat reminiscent of a 2002 movie by the same name.
Podgurski was convicted of 29 felony counts related to insurance fraud last month.
The former Amtrak clerk had six disability policies. She claimed to suffer disabilities after allegedly falling in her home.
However, Podgurski travelled extensively after making her disability claim, including a 16 day tour in China with her boyfriend. She also took several road trips.
“This type of fraud undermines critical services and care for disabled Californians, and victimizes taxpayers. I’m proud that our state tax investigators helped to end this costly criminal scheme,” State Controller and Franchise Tax Board Chair John Chiang told CBS Los Angeles .
Authorities caught up with Podgurski in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. Members of the San Diego County District Attorney’s Fugitive Task Force arrested her on July 4.
“The defendant in this case was brazen in both the large-scale fraud she committed and the way she mocked the criminal justice system. Law enforcement, and in particular the U.S. Marshals and Fugitive Task Force, did a great job tracking the defendant down and taking her into custody,” Dumanis told the Inquisitr .
