With the departure of founding member and lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, the Editors have discovered a new and intriguing side to their musical talent.

Recorded with new members Justin Lockey and Elliott Williams, The Weight of Your Love maintains the Editors’ habitual gloom, but with an increasingly heavy, dark tone.

“It's our fourth record and we don't want to feel like we're doing the same thing again,” singer Tom Smith said in 2011, while they were still writing the album.

The Editors channel classic horror movie sounds in the opening of the first track “The Weight,” setting the tone for the rest of the thumping song. “I promised myself I wouldn’t sing about death,” sings Smith. The track’s heaviness and deep lyrics beg the listener to take another listen to make sure nothing was missed.

Smith’s crooning voice has developed a maturity beyond that of the group’s previous albums. His falsetto on “What Is This Thing Called Love” gives an utterly moving quality to the already-emotional ballad.

“What Is This Thing Called Love” is perhaps the brightest star amongst the album’s other incredible tracks. While they all have the relatable and sometimes heartbreaking lyrics typical of the Editors, “Thing Called Love” reaches a whole new level of relatable, heartrending lyrics and high quality musical talent.
