Night Singers is the second full-length album from the dynamic indie duo Eric and Magill. Night Singers is the follow up to their spring EP Two Travelers.
Eric and Magill consist of Ryan Weber and Eric Osterman who collaborate with the vocals, guitar and keyboard. Eric lives in Brooklyn and Ryan is currently in Kenya worked through email to write and record their EP Two Travelers. Despite having a long distance between them half a year later the determined duo worked on getting Night Singers out in the music scene.
In an interview with Live High Five Ryan said that he is on a two-year tour with the Peace Corps. He has been working on water infrastructure projects in a very remote region of Kenya called West Pokot. On his down time Ryan was in the zone of writing music.
About their musical influences Ryan said, “I listen to music across the board. I got a bit into Taarab or coast style music here in Kenya. I like finding new bands that I think are inspiring and try to work with them. I think that is one of my favorite parts about this project, meeting new people and collaborating with them. There are so many amazing artists that I’ve had the pleasure of getting tracks from.”
The album opens with the track “What I Say” which has an electric indie pop opening fused with Kenyan chants. It represents the two worlds that Ryan and Eric live in and combines their musical influences. The hard beat of the drums is prominent and enticing that matches the guitar riffs. The same sound is continued in the next single “Baggage and Clothes.” The song has an upbeat and feel good vibe with its catchy chorus. The album ends in a more mellow tempo with the single “Night Singers.” The album boomed into motion with the high-energy funk and fell short with the ending song. It still is a compelling song with the keyboard droning in the background and the vocals being in sync with the melding of instruments.
Eric and Magill have presented ten bubbly indie pop tracks in Night Singers that are worth listening to.
