A gunman holding hostages killed six people in an apartment complex near Miami, before being fatally shot by a SWAT team.

The dead bodies of three women and two men were found throughout the apartment building after the gunman was apprehended.

A spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department told CBS that they received a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday that shots had been fired in the south Florida apartment complex.

A crisis team tried to negotiate with the gunman to release the hostages safely, but after an eight hour stand-off, the SWAT team stormed the building. The hostages were left unharmed during the exchange of gunfire in which the gunman was fatally shot.

The altercation began when the gunman got into an argument with the couple who ran the apartment, according to The Global Post. The landlords were two of his six victims who were shot dead.

Police are further investigating the motive of the gunman along with his identification.
