Randy Travis is in critical condition in an undisclosed hospital in Texas.

The famous country singer is suffering complications from a heart infection known as viral cardiomyopathy.

Travis had two live performances at the end of June. He appeared to be feeling well at a business meeting on Saturday July 7.

"Then on Sunday, it hit him," Kirt Webster, Travis’ publicist, told CNN Entertainment .

WebMD describes cardiomyopathy as a disease that enlarges the left side of the heart and makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively.

Treatment consists of medication and surgically implanted medical devices. In worst-case scenarios, patients may need a heart transplant. If left untreated, cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure and death.

The award-winning singer is working on a new album to be released this fall. The first tract on the new album is a tribute to George Jones.

Some of Travis’ well-known songs include "Forever and Ever, Amen," and "Diggin' Up Bones."
