As a part of a four picture deal with Universal, actor/director Guillermo del Toro is in talks with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman to get started on an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five.
According to Indie Wire, del Toro’s projects, like Pacific Rim releasing this Friday, continue to pile up, but he has hopes to work with Kaufman.
He told the Daily Telegraph that he had an hour-and-a-half conversation with the screenwriter on how they would adapt the book.
"I love the idea of the Trafalmadorians [the aliens of 'Slaughterhouse-Five'] -- to be 'unstuck in time,' where everything is happening at the same time. And that's what I want to do. It's just a catch-22,” he said.
The story follows Billie Pilgrim, a war veteran during World War II who travels in between different moments of his life.
Del Toro said the studio would be willing to make the movie, but not until he had a screenplay.
“Charlie Kaufman is a very expensive writer!” he said.
Kaufman has penned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, according to Yahoo.
