Iraq was hit by a wave of coordinated car bombings at rush hour on Monday, which has reportedly killed at least 55 people and left many others injured.

These bombings occurred in central and southern Iraq which are predominantly Shi'ite areas.

Ali Khalil, a taxi driver, witnessed the first explosion that occurred.

“I heard a thunderous explosion that shook my car and broke the rear window. I immediately pulled over and didn’t know what to do while seeing people running or lying on the ground,” The Hindu reported.

No terrorists groups have yet claimed responsibility for the attacks yet, but Al-Qaeda is suspected to be behind these vicious explosions that rocked Iraq. The group is known to cause such explosions frequently in an attempt to attenuate the Shi'ite led government.

According to The Indian Express, this year has witnessed multiple similar-styled explosions, which have killed nearly 4000 people as recorded by Iraq Body Count, which is a violence monitoring group.
