J Cole was riding high off the success he had from his sophomore album Born Sinner when he released a collaboration with Drake called Jodeci Freestyle. The song was released for free download as a thank you to fans, but it has now come under fire for offensive lyrics.
There has been a recent trend in hip hop where artists have been called out for offensive lyrics. Kanye West offended people with a line about Parkinson's on his new album Yeezus. Rick Ross and Lil Wayne have recently lost endorsement deals due to offensive lyrics.
Cole's lyric has led to a petition being started by the Anti-Bullying alliance, and has already reached over 2600 signatures online according to Complex Music. The petition asks for an apology from both artists, (even though Drake seemingly has nothing to do with that particular lyric) and that the lyric be removed from the song.
Since the petition has surfaced J Cole took to twitter to write a formal apology. The apology can be seen here, and Cole says he never intended to hurt anyone he wanted to make something he felt wrong about, right.
J Cole is typically a well spoken, and cognizant rapper who rarely deals with controversy. It will be interesting to see whether the Anti-Bullying alliance accepts this apology or takes this petition even further.
