Jay-Z has dropped the hyphen in his name and has officially changed his name to Jay Z. His official website, as well as iTunes and YouTube have changed the spelling.
Billboard editor, Joe Levy, took to Twitter to announce:
Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.
— Joe Levy (@RealJoeLevy) July 18, 2013
And although some argue this “happened several years ago,” just like one of Levy’s followers told him, he claimed “Didn't take, though. The hyphen is strong.”
The Mirror notes his Watch the Throne album with Kanye West was touted without the hyphen an in all caps, while Magna Carta Holy Grail doesn’t help the argument because there is a line through his name. When his label, Roc Nation, puts out an official statement, the elimination of the hyphen might be made final.
Meanwhile, Jay has added several more tour dates to his UK tour after the first six dates he planned were sold out within seconds. Magna Carta Holy Grail is the rapper’s first No. 1 album in the UK.
