One of Arizona’s senators and prominent Republican, John McCain, said Sunday that he agrees with President Obama’s remarks on the controversial “Stand Your Ground” Florida law that contributed to the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week after he shot and killed an unarmed African-American teen last year.

The Florida state law states that an individual has the right to use force to defend themselves without any requirement to retreat from a dangerous situation. After the jury ruled Zimmerman not guilty for the death of Trayvon Martin, hundreds of angry protesters blamed the law for allowing Zimmerman to walk free and use the claim of self-defense.

NBC reports that the state of Arizona has a similar law, and McCain suggested that he had an interest in reviewing and possibly changing the law after the controversial trial.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz suggested that he did not agree with President Obama’s review of the law and said he was just attempting to enforce stricter gun laws.

“I respect his view, but I don’t frankly see the connection,” McCain said, according to Washington Post.
