Katharine McPhee is not letting Smash define her next album.
The former Smash Star had plans to write her next album to go with the style of the show but she said her work on the show did not allow that to happen.
“Our intention was probably to get a record out last year. But I think it became pretty evident that my mind was so consumed with the show,” she told Rolling Stone.
McPhee began working on her new album before Smash was cancelled. She has written with Ryan Tedder, Sia, and hopes to collaborate with EDM’s Calvin Harris.
“Not every song has to be something I’ve written, but I do know it has to be something I connect to and it has to be a melody that suits me and that doesn’t feel like it’s a stretch,” she said.
Her next album will feature different styles. However, the theatrical style she sang on Smash is not in the plans for her upcoming album.
“I love the ability to be a chameleon singer, sing different kind of styles and sound more Broadway here, more twangy here, more edgy here and that’s fun. but I wouldn’t say there’s any influence form the show as far as the Broadway pop stuff that will go into my own personal record,” she said.
McPhee’s new record is a follow up to 2010’s Unbroken and will be released through Columbia records. Her self-titled debut album through RCA hit number two on Billboard 200 charts and Unbroken debuted at number 27 according to Billboard.
