Following a string of thefts across Europe in the past few months, a jewel thief sneaked into a hotel in Cannes, France on Sunday and made off with millions in various baubles and jewelry, all in under a minute.
The lone, armed thief stole an estimated $136 million in jewels from the exclusive Carlton Intercontinental Hotel, the Telegraph reports.
The raid took place while the jewels were being moved from safes into display cases in the hotel exhibit room. Though the thief, disguised in dark clothing, scarf and cap, was suave enough to steal the jewels by himself, he did drop some items as he made his escape, said the Telegraph.
The Carlton Hotel is where many Hollywood stars stay during the annual film festival, reports the Independent. Neither French police nor hotel representatives have offered any comments on the theft and actively denied journalists entrance into the exhibit room of the hotel.
The jewelry heist comes at a time when several diamonds thefts have plagued Europe as diamond values have risen this year. The infamous “Pink Panther” gang, who are currently being linked by police to many of the thefts this year, sprang a member from a Swiss prison a few days ago.
