Matthew Morrison still performed on Sunday afternoon in New York, just hours after Hollywood received the shocking news that his Glee co-star Cory Monteith had died at age 31. Morrison paid tribute to Monteith with a different song to start his show and mentioned his co-star’s death.

The New York Times reports that Morrison sang the A Chorus Line song “What I did for Love” a cappella and called Monteith a brother before singing. He expressed his condolences at the start.

After he finished the song, which was performed on Glee in season two, he said it was “awkward” to keep the show going. “You guys came to see a show, I came to perform a show, so that’s what we’ll do. And we’ll do it in Cory’s honor,” he told the crowd.

“He was very emotional on stage,” a source for Us Weekly said about Morrison. “It was difficult for him to get up to perform, but he did not want to disappoint anyone.”

Monteith’s death was confirmed by Vancouver police late Saturday night. While they have ruled out foul play, they did not release a cause of death and the autopsy is scheduled for today.

“We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss,” Monteith’s rep told the media.
