New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner and wife Huma Abedin have maintained a strong front and insisted on Weiner’s continued campaign despite multiple newspapers calling for him to drop out.
The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Daily News have all called for Weiner to drop out of the race for mayor, reports USA Today.
Weiner and his wife have refused to give into the pressure. Abedin, who was notably absent when he admitted to sexting and resigned from Congress in 2011, according to CNN, has stood behind her husband in light of the newly-surfaced explicit messages.
“It took a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy to get to a place where I could forgive Anthony,” Abedin said. “It was not an easy choice in any way, but I made the decision that it was worth staying in this marriage.”
“I love him, I have forgiven him, I believe in him, and, as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward,” she said in support of her husband.
Weiner has insisted that the new lewd messages should not change anything.
“I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have,” he said, according to the Washington Post.
“While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me.”
