Michael Cera recently took on the role as an arrogant American roadtripper in the indie film Crystal Fairy & the Magic Cactus.

The movie, which also stars Gaby Hoffman, impressed critics at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The film centers around a group of young Americans roadtripping through Chile and experimenting with drugs - specifically hallucinogenic mescaline extracted from a cactus that the characters steal .

While on set, the Cera and Hoffman actually took the drug before filming the scene.

“I was still present enough that I could step in and out of [the high],” Hoffman told Vanity Fair.

The film set was very relaxed - the movie didn’t even have a screenplay. Before shooting, the actors decided amongst themselves what their exact dialogue would be.

“Yeah there was basically an outline without dialogue written. And that’s what we worked off of,” Cera explained to CBS News.

Crystal Fairy and the Magic Cactus will play in select theaters this coming Friday. Check out a trailer for the movie below.
